America's Deadliest Maritime Disaster: Worse Than Titanic, Yet Forgotten?

The sinking of the SS Sultana on April 27, 1865, remains the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history, claiming more lives than the Titanic, yet it's largely forgotten by the public.

The paddlewheeler was licensed to carry only 376 passengers but was illegally overloaded with an estimated 2,100-2,400 Union soldiers returning home from Confederate prison camps, along with civilians and cargo. Just north of Memphis on the Mississippi River, its four boilers exploded due to a combination of poor maintenance, substandard repairs, and extreme pressure from the overcrowding. The ensuing fire and chaos led to a devastating loss of life, estimated between 1,700 and 1,800 people, many of whom drowned or burned, far exceeding the Titanic's approximately 1,500 casualties. The disaster received little attention at the time, tragically overshadowed by the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the end of the U.S. Civil War.
