Australia's Cinematic First: The World's Original Feature Film

While Hollywood often comes to mind for early film milestones, the world's first-ever feature-length film, *The Story of the Kelly Gang*, premiered in Australia in 1906, years before many international rivals.

This groundbreaking silent film, running approximately 60-70 minutes, chronicled the life of the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang. Its unprecedented length posed challenges for exhibition, as audiences were typically used to much shorter cinematic shorts. However, the film's significant commercial success demonstrated the viability and appeal of extended narrative storytelling, revolutionizing the burgeoning film industry and establishing the feature film as a dominant format. Unfortunately, only fragments of this historically pivotal movie survive today.
