Beyond Valhalla: Freyja's Afterlife for Half the Heroes

Beyond Valhalla: Freyja's Afterlife for Half the Heroes

Did you know? While Valhalla is famously Odin's hall for fallen warriors, half of those slain in battle actually go to Fólkvangr, the beautiful field of the goddess Freyja, where she personally chooses her share.

Fólkvangr, meaning 'Field of the Host' or 'People's Field,' is described in the Poetic Edda as Freyja's abode and the destination for half of the heroic dead. This challenges the popular singular image of Valhalla as the sole afterlife for warriors. Freyja's hall within Fólkvangr is Sessrúmnir, and it implies a significant, albeit often overlooked, role for her in the Norse concept of the afterlife, sharing the chosen dead with Odin.
