Christ's Curious Relic: The Holy Foreskin

For centuries, one of Christianity's most surprisingly revered (and peculiar) relics was the Holy Prepuce, believed to be the foreskin of Jesus removed during his circumcision eight days after birth.

Over a dozen churches across Europe claimed to possess this unique sacred object, leading to fervent veneration and intense rivalries over its authenticity. Its presence in the Roman Martyrology until 1960, and association with various miracles—like one claim it helped cure the plague—illustrates a medieval piety seeking tangible, albeit unusual, connections to the divine. The relic's eventual repudiation by the Church reflected changing theological and cultural perspectives, rendering a once-sacred object into a curious historical footnote.
