Clicking Wood: The Computer Mouse's Humble Wooden Beginnings
Believe it or not, the very first computer mouse wasn't sleek plastic or metal, but a humble wooden block with wheels. It looked more like a tiny car than the sophisticated pointing devices we use today.
Invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1964 at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), this prototype mouse was literally a carved wooden shell. It housed two perpendicular wheels that tracked horizontal and vertical movement, along with a single button. Engelbart famously demonstrated his invention during 'The Mother of All Demos' in 1968, fundamentally revolutionizing human-computer interaction by enabling users to intuitively manipulate elements on a graphical interface.
