Did you know? Socrates's 'Daemon' Was a Divine Guide, Not a Demon!
Most people associate the word "daemon" with evil, but in ancient Greece, a 'daemon' was often a benevolent, semi-divine spirit or an inner guiding voice, famously advising the philosopher Socrates.
For the ancient Greeks, daemons were intermediary beings between gods and mortals, not inherently good or evil, often embodying a person's fortune or destiny. Socrates famously spoke of his own 'daimonion,' an inner divine sign or voice that would warn him against wrong actions, but never positively tell him what to do. This philosophical concept contrasts sharply with the later Judeo-Christian adoption of 'demon' to exclusively denote malevolent entities.
