Did you know? The 1518 Dancing Plague: When 400 people danced uncontrollably for weeks!

In the summer of 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea began dancing uncontrollably in Strasbourg, initiating an inexplicable 'dancing plague' that saw hundreds of people dancing for weeks on end. Many victims eventually succumbed to exhaustion, heart attacks, or strokes.

This bizarre phenomenon, known as choreomania, started with Frau Troffea in July and quickly spread, involving an estimated 400 people. Authorities initially encouraged the dancing, believing it would resolve itself, but later attempted to contain it, even opening guildhalls for the afflicted. While various theories ranging from demonic possession to ergot poisoning have been proposed, the most accepted explanation today points to stress-induced mass psychogenic illness, possibly exacerbated by famine, disease, and superstition prevalent in the region during that period.
