Did you know? The Great London Beer Flood: A Tsunami of Stout!
In 1814, a massive vat at the Meux & Co Brewery in London burst, unleashing over 1.4 million liters of beer onto the streets, which flooded homes and tragically killed at least eight people.
The catastrophic event occurred in the densely populated St Giles Rookery, an impoverished neighborhood. The collapse of the giant 7-meter-tall wooden vat triggered a chain reaction, rupturing other vats and sending a powerful 4.6-meter-high wave of brown stout through the area. Victims included a mother and child, and several mourners attending a wake. The incident was initially deemed an Act of God, absolving the brewery of legal responsibility, though they still faced substantial financial losses from the destroyed product.
