Did you know? The predominant sound in many ocean regions isn't waves or whales, but the collective cacophony of tiny snapping shrimp, whose rapid claw closures create a sound louder than a jet engine.
Snapping shrimp, also known as pistol shrimp, possess a unique claw adapted to create a cavitation bubble. When the claw snaps shut, it generates a high-speed jet of water, forming a bubble that implodes almost instantly. This implosion produces a shockwave that reaches temperatures of thousands of Kelvin and generates sound intense enough to stun or kill small prey, disrupt sonar, and even break glass in controlled experiments. The cumulative clicks from billions of these shrimp form a continuous crackling soundscape that can dominate the acoustic environment of coral reefs and shallow tropical waters.
