One prominent etymological theory suggests 'Mafia' derives from the Arabic term 'ma hias' or 'maha,' meaning 'boasting' or 'bragging,' reflecting a defiant character often attributed to Sicilians under foreign rule. Another proposed root is 'mahfil' or 'mahya,' referring to a 'meeting place' or 'place of refuge.' This linguistic connection highlights Sicily's long history under Arab dominion from the 9th to 11th centuries, showcasing how a distinct cultural identity—and eventually, a name for its notorious criminal society—could have emerged from ancient foreign influences.
