Recent groundbreaking research, utilizing specialized microphones, has revealed that plants under various forms of stress, such as dehydration or stem cutting, produce a surprisingly high number of airborne ultrasonic sounds. These distinct noises, ranging from 20 to 100 kilohertz, are not random; they carry information and vary depending on the type and severity of stress. While their precise ecological function is still being investigated, scientists hypothesize these sounds could potentially be a form of communication, alerting nearby plants or even attracting/repelling animals like moths or bats, thereby unveiling a previously hidden auditory dimension of nature.
