Doppelgänger Delusion: When Your Loved One Becomes an Imposter
Imagine looking at your spouse or parent and being convinced they're an identical imposter. This bizarre neurological condition, known as Capgras Syndrome, causes individuals to believe their loved ones have been replaced by look-alikes.
Capgras Syndrome is a rare delusional misidentification syndrome, often associated with neurological conditions like dementia, brain injury, or psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Sufferers recognize faces but lack the familiar emotional connection typically felt towards loved ones. This emotional disconnect leads their brains to 'rationalize' the experience by concluding the person must be an imposter. Neuroscientists theorize it may stem from a disconnect between the brain's temporal lobe, which processes facial recognition, and the limbic system, responsible for emotional responses and memory.
