From Land Managers to Crime Lords: The Sicilian Roots of the Mafia

The early Sicilian Mafia didn't start purely as criminal gangs, but rather emerged from *gabelloti*, powerful land managers who exploited feudal-era absentee landlords and peasants, often employing their own armed enforcers.

In 19th-century Sicily, many wealthy landowners were absent, relying on *gabelloti* to lease and manage their vast agricultural estates. These *gabelloti* often sub-leased the land to peasants at exorbitant rates, using private armed guards, precursors to mafiosi, to enforce contracts, settle disputes, and 'protect' property – often extorting protection money themselves. This system allowed them to amass significant wealth and power, blurring the lines between legitimate business, private justice, and organized crime, eventually evolving into the structured criminal enterprise we know today.
