Humans Glow! We Emit Faint Light, Invisible to the Naked Eye
Surprisingly, humans actually emit a faint, visible light, although it's about 1,000 times too weak for our naked eyes to perceive. This subtle glow, often strongest around the face, is a byproduct of biochemical reactions happening constantly within our bodies.
This phenomenon, more accurately described as chemiluminescence rather than true bioluminescence, originates from the release of photons during metabolic processes and free radical reactions. Studies using highly sensitive cameras have revealed that this emission fluctuates with our circadian rhythm, typically peaking in the late afternoon and diminishing around midnight. Scientists are investigating whether this intrinsic light could someday serve as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, offering insights into human health and disease by observing changes in its patterns.
