Karni Mata Temple: Where 25,000 Rats Are Revered as Holy
In Deshnoke, India, the Karni Mata Temple is home to over 25,000 black rats, known as "kabbas," who are worshipped as sacred manifestations of the goddess Karni Mata and her clan.
Devotees believe these rats are reincarnated family members of the 14th-century mystic Karni Mata, who is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Durga. Worshippers offer them milk, sweets, and grains, considering food nibbled by the rats a blessing. Finding one of the rare white rats among the thousands of black ones is considered particularly auspicious, as they are thought to be Karni Mata herself or her sons, signifying a direct encounter with the divine.
