Maggot Medicine: Tiny Helpers for Tough Wounds!

Maggot Medicine: Tiny Helpers for Tough Wounds!

Believe it or not, sterile maggots are sometimes used by doctors today to clean out difficult, non-healing wounds, effectively eating away dead tissue without harming healthy flesh. This unusual therapy is surprisingly effective where conventional treatments fail.

Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) has roots in ancient cultures and gained medical recognition during World War I when battlefield surgeons noted that soldiers' wounds infested with maggots healed remarkably well. The larvae of specific fly species, such as *Lucilia sericata* (the common green bottle fly), are cultivated in sterile environments for medical use. They secrete powerful digestive enzymes that liquefy necrotic tissue, which they then ingest. Furthermore, maggots possess antimicrobial properties, making them highly efficient bio-surgical tools that also stimulate wound healing.
