No Clergy, Just Elections: The Baháʼí Faith's Unique Governance

Did you know the Baháʼí Faith, a monotheistic religion with millions of adherents worldwide, has no clergy whatsoever? Instead, its communities are administered by democratically elected councils.

This absence of professional clergy is a foundational principle of the Baháʼí Faith, emphasizing individual responsibility for spiritual growth and community service. Baháʼí administration operates through annually elected "Spiritual Assemblies" at local and national levels, with no campaigning or nominations. These councils, composed of nine members, are responsible for the spiritual and administrative affairs of their respective communities. The global affairs are overseen by the internationally elected "Universal House of Justice" in Haifa, Israel, forming a unique system designed to foster unity and prevent hierarchy.
