Orange Carrots are a Royal Invention!
Did you know that the vibrant orange carrots we commonly eat today were specifically cultivated by Dutch farmers in the 17th century? This patriotic breeding effort was a deliberate tribute to the House of Orange.
Before the 17th century, the dominant carrot varieties cultivated across Europe and Asia were diverse in color, including purple, white, and yellow. Dutch growers, in a show of support for William of Orange, the leader of the Dutch Revolt against Spain, selectively bred orange carrots from naturally occurring mutants. This new orange cultivar became incredibly popular, not only for its novelty and association with national pride but also for its improved sweetness and texture, eventually dominating the global market.
