Pineapples: Europe's Pricy Edible Status Symbol
Did you know that in 18th-century Europe, pineapples were such an extravagant status symbol that people would rent them by the day just to display them at dinner parties, often without ever eating them?
Transporting these delicate tropical fruits across oceans was incredibly challenging and expensive, making them symbols of immense wealth and power. A single pineapple could cost the equivalent of thousands of dollars today. This led to a peculiar rental market where the same fruit would circulate among aristocrats as a high-society prop, flaunting the host's affluence and worldliness before it was eventually consumed or discarded.
