Pineapples: The Rented Royalty of the European Dinner Table?
Did you know? In 18th-century Europe, pineapples were such a rare and expensive luxury that wealthy hosts would sometimes rent them for an evening to display as a status symbol, rather than eat them.
Imported from the tropics, pineapples were incredibly difficult to cultivate in Europe's climate, making them exceptionally scarce and costly. A single pineapple could fetch the equivalent of thousands of dollars in today's money. Their exotic appearance and sweet taste made them the ultimate centerpiece, often displayed prominently at lavish banquets before being discreetly returned to their owner, sometimes to be rented out again. This practice underscored the host's immense wealth and sophisticated taste.
