Silent Films' Secret: Why They Look So Fast Today

The standard 24 fps we know today for cinema only became widely adopted with the arrival of synchronized sound in the late 1920s, as a constant speed was essential for keeping sound and image in perfect sync. Prior to this, projectionists frequently adjusted the speed of silent films, sometimes to match a live orchestra's tempo, heighten dramatic tension, or simply to fill a screening slot. When these films are shown at modern 24 fps, the original slower movements are unintentionally accelerated, creating the familiar "fast-forward" effect and contributing to the misconception of universal over-the-top silent film acting.
