Steam-Powered Speeds: The Forgotten First Motorcycle
While many credit the 1885 Daimler Reitwagen as the first gasoline motorcycle, the very first self-propelled two-wheeled vehicle was likely a steam-powered velocipede built in the United States by Sylvester H. Roper in 1867, nearly two decades earlier.
Roper's steam velocipede integrated a small coal-fired steam boiler and twin cylinders directly into a reinforced bicycle frame. This innovative machine could reportedly achieve speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, an astounding feat for its time. Tragically, Sylvester Roper suffered a fatal heart attack while demonstrating an improved version of his steam velocipede in 1896. His pioneering work predates Gottlieb Daimler's gasoline-powered machine by nearly two decades, highlighting a fascinating, often overlooked, chapter in the origins of motorized personal transport.
