The Colorful Secret of Ancient Statues
Contrary to popular belief, the pristine white marble of ancient Greek and Roman statues that we admire today was once covered in vivid and often astonishingly bright paint.
For centuries, the Western aesthetic ideal revered the 'pure' white appearance of classical statuary, influencing Neoclassical art. However, archaeological research and scientific analysis, employing techniques like UV fluorescence and raking light photography, have revealed microscopic pigment traces. These show that sculptures were polychrome, featuring painted skin, hair, eyes, patterned clothing, and even decorative elements on architecture, creating a much more vibrant and lifelike, albeit perhaps jarringly colourful, impression than we currently imagine.
