While an earlier patent for a four-wheeled suitcase that required a separate strap to pull was granted to Bernard Sadow in 1970, it didn't widely catch on. The true game-changer was Robert Plath's 'Rollaboard' in 1987, designed by the Northwest Airlines pilot for easier maneuvering through airport aisles and security. This simple yet revolutionary invention quickly became a global standard, freeing millions from the literal burden of travel and reshaping airport design.
