The Daring Race Car Driver Who Gave Us the Rearview Mirror!

The Daring Race Car Driver Who Gave Us the Rearview Mirror!

Did you know? The essential rearview mirror, now standard in every car, was popularized by trailblazing British race car driver Dorothy Levitt, who suggested its use for safer driving in 1909.

Before Levitt's groundbreaking suggestion, drivers relied on a mechanic or passenger to look backward, or physically turned their heads. In her 1909 book, 'The Woman and the Car,' she advised carrying a small hand-mirror to 'hold up occasionally to see what is behind you.' While early prototypes of viewing devices existed, Levitt's widely publicized and practical advice helped cement the concept, making it an indispensable safety feature for solo drivers and racers alike. Her contribution significantly advanced automotive safety and design.
