The "Failed" Super Glue Attempt That Created the Post-it Note
The ubiquitous Post-it Note didn't come from a quest for office supplies, but rather from a 3M scientist's "failed" attempt to create a super-strong adhesive, resulting in a perfectly repositionable, low-tack glue instead.
In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver was developing an extra-strong adhesive when he accidentally invented a "microsphere" adhesive that stuck lightly and could be peeled off without leaving a residue. For five years, this unique glue remained a solution without a problem until his colleague, Art Fry, frustrated by paper bookmarks falling from his hymnbook, realized Silver's invention was the perfect answer. Fry proposed applying the adhesive to paper, creating the first Post-it Notes in 1974, which were initially marketed as "Press 'n Peel" before becoming a global sensation.
