DID YOU KNOW…
The First Webcam's Caffeinated Mission
The world's first webcam wasn't developed for video calls or security surveillance, but rather to monitor the fill level of a coffee pot at the University of Cambridge's Computer Lab.
Frustrated by constantly finding the coffee pot empty after a trip downstairs, researchers in the 'Trojan Room' in 1991 set up a camera pointing at their communal coffee machine. The camera captured 128x128 grayscale images three times a minute, sending them to their internal network. This ingenious, albeit simple, solution allowed anyone on the network to check the coffee status from their desk. When the World Wide Web emerged, the 'Trojan Room Coffee Pot' gained global fame, becoming a quirky icon of early internet culture before its eventual deactivation in 2001.
