The Invisible Ingredients of a Mythical Beast's Chain

The Invisible Ingredients of a Mythical Beast's Chain

Did you know? In Norse mythology, the monstrous wolf Fenrir was bound not by iron, but by a deceptively thin, silken ribbon called Gleipnir, crafted from six impossible-to-find ingredients.

This magical fetter, forged by the dwarves at the request of the gods, included the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird. These fantastical components were chosen to ensure its unbreakable strength and to explain why these phenomena no longer exist in the world today. The gods ultimately sacrificed the god Tyr's hand to bind Fenrir, fulfilling a prophecy that foretold the wolf's role in Ragnarök.
