The Invisible Orchestra: Playing Music Without Touching Your Instrument!
Did you know? The Theremin, one of the earliest electronic musical instruments, is played entirely without physical contact, producing eerie, sci-fi sounds by sensing the performer's hand movements in its electromagnetic field.
Invented in 1920 by Russian physicist Léon Theremin, the instrument consists of two antennae: one controls pitch, the other volume. Moving hands closer or further from these antennae alters the electromagnetic field, which in turn changes the oscillation frequency and amplitude, generating its signature ethereal sound. Though often associated with spooky movie soundtracks and sci-fi, it was originally conceived for classical music performance and even had its own virtuosos like Clara Rockmore, who performed extensively with the instrument.
