The Myth of 'Silent' Films: They Were Loud & Wildly Varied in Speed!
While dubbed "silent films," these early cinematic experiences were anything but quiet, featuring live musical accompaniment and narration; moreover, their projection speeds varied wildly, often making actors' movements appear exaggerated.
Before the standardization of 22-24 frames per second (fps) with the advent of sound film, silent movies were shot and projected anywhere from 12 to 22 fps. This inconsistency was often due to hand-cranked cameras and projectors, leading to scenes appearing faster or slower than intended. To compensate for the variable pace and to convey emotion without dialogue, actors developed an expressive, often exaggerated, physical acting style. Audiences rarely experienced a truly "silent" film, as most screenings were accompanied by live musicians, from solo pianists to full orchestras, creating unique auditory backdrops for each showing.
