The Only Sport Ever Played on the Moon? Astronaut Alan Shepard's Lunar Links!
During the Apollo 14 mission in 1971, astronaut Alan Shepard famously became the first and only person to play golf on the Moon, using a modified 6-iron.
Shepard smuggled a collapsible club head and two golf balls aboard the lunar module, attaching the head to a geological sampling tool handle. Despite his bulky spacesuit and one-sixth Earth's gravity, his second shot was estimated to have traveled several hundred yards. This iconic moment, intended to demonstrate the fun side of space exploration, was immortalized by a famous quote from Shepard: "Miles and miles and miles." It stands as a unique testament to human ingenuity and the playful spirit that can surface even in the most demanding environments.
