Before modern tourism, young aristocrats from Northern Europe embarked on an educational rite of passage called the "Grand Tour," sometimes lasting years, to explore the cultural capitals of the continent, particularly Italy.
From the 17th to the 19th centuries, the Grand Tour was considered an essential part of a gentleman's education, aimed at exposing them to classical antiquity, art, and fashionable society. Venice, Florence, and Rome were popular destinations, where travelers would study classical architecture, acquire souvenirs, and hone their social graces. This extensive journey often involved significant expense and personal risk, yet it was deemed crucial for developing a sophisticated, cultured individual fit for public life. The practice also laid some groundwork for modern tourism, shifting travel from purely mercantile or religious pursuits to leisure and education.
