Did you know? The term "placebo" originates from the Latin for "I shall please" and historically described treatments given to patients primarily for comfort or to satisfy them, rather than for a specific cure. It wasn't always just about inert sugar pills.
While the concept of inert treatments dates back centuries, the word "placebo" first appeared in a medical dictionary in 1785, defined as a "commonplace method or medicine." For a long time, it referred to routine or palliative care. It wasn't until the mid-20th century that placebos became fundamental tools in clinical trials, used as inactive controls to rigorously test the true efficacy of new drugs and interventions, thereby transforming medical research methodology.
