The Royal Reason Behind the Marathon's Peculiar Length

The Royal Reason Behind the Marathon's Peculiar Length

The marathon's precise distance of 42.195 kilometers (26 miles 385 yards) isn't an ancient tradition or a natural measurement. It was specifically established for the 1908 London Olympics to ensure the race finished directly in front of the Royal Box.

While the original Olympic marathon in 1896 covered approximately 40 km, commemorating the legendary run of Pheidippides, the distance fluctuated in subsequent Games. For the London 1908 Olympics, organizers opted for a start at Windsor Castle, with the finish line positioned inside White City Stadium directly beneath the Royal Box. This extended the course to exactly 42.195 km. The dramatic finish of that race, coupled with its consistent challenge, led the International Amateur Athletic Federation (now World Athletics) to officially standardize this specific distance in 1921, making it the globally recognized length for all marathons.
