The beloved Slinky toy wasn't actually meant for play; it was accidentally invented in 1943 by naval mechanical engineer Richard James, who was developing springs to stabilize sensitive ship equipment.
James was working with tension springs when one accidentally fell from a shelf and "walked" across a stack of books before landing on the floor. Fascinated by its unique movement, he saw potential beyond military use. With his wife Betty, they refined the design and secured a loan to produce the toy. The Slinky debuted at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia, selling out 400 units in a mere 90 minutes. Its simple, mesmerizing motion has since made it a timeless toy, selling over 300 million units worldwide.
