The Sound That Glows: Bubbles Emitting Light Hotter Than the Sun

Tiny bubbles collapsing in water can briefly reach temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun, emitting flashes of light in a phenomenon called sonoluminescence. This incredible transformation effectively turns sound into a spectacle of light and extreme heat.

Sonoluminescence occurs when high-intensity sound waves create and collapse microscopic bubbles (cavitation bubbles) in a liquid. As a bubble rapidly implodes, the gas inside is compressed to extreme pressures and temperatures, exciting atoms which then emit photons of light. While the exact mechanism is still a subject of ongoing research, possibilities include shock waves within the bubble, microscale nuclear fusion (largely disproven for current setups), or a plasma discharge. These momentary events can generate temperatures of thousands of Kelvin, briefly exceeding the surface temperature of the Sun. Scientists continue to study sonoluminescence for its potential in areas like energy production or advanced material synthesis.
