The Sun's True Color: It's Not Yellow!

Despite how it's commonly depicted, the Sun isn't yellow, orange, or red – it's actually white! Our atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light, making the Sun appear yellowish from Earth's surface.

The Sun emits a full spectrum of visible light, meaning it produces all colors of the rainbow almost equally. When all these colors combine, they produce white light, which is how astronauts perceive the Sun from outside Earth's atmosphere. However, as sunlight travels through our atmosphere, a process called Rayleigh scattering preferentially removes shorter wavelengths like blue and violet light. This scattering is why the sky appears blue and, conversely, why the remaining light that reaches our eyes directly makes the Sun appear yellow during the day, and even redder at sunrise and sunset due to the longer path through the atmosphere.
