Astronauts returning from spacewalks consistently report that space has a peculiar, distinct smell, often likened to seared steak, hot metal, or welding fumes. This unexpected aroma provides a unique sensory detail from beyond Earth.
This unique aroma isn't experienced directly in the vacuum of space, which is odorless, but rather clings to their spacesuits and equipment after exposure. Scientists hypothesize that this scent is likely caused by high-energy vibrations from dying stars and other complex chemical reactions, producing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that attach to surfaces. These PAHs are carbon-based molecules found in various earthly substances like coal and oil, and even in burnt toast. Astronauts only detect this smell upon repressurization, offering a strange, metallic whiff of the cosmos.
