The World's Shortest War: An Epic Battle in Under an Hour
Did you know? The Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896 holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest recorded war, ending in a remarkably brief 38 to 45 minutes.
The conflict began on August 27, 1896, after Sultan Khalid bin Barghash seized the Zanzibari throne without British consent, violating a treaty. When Khalid defied an ultimatum to step down, British warships in Zanzibar's harbor opened fire on the palace. The Sultan's forces, largely outgunned and unprepared, were quickly overwhelmed, leading to his palace being partially destroyed and his hasty retreat. The swift engagement resulted in around 500 Zanzibari casualties and the installation of a pro-British Sultan, marking a decisive end to the brief but impactful confrontation.
