The Year the Sun Forgot: How a Volcano Caused Global Famine
The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia was so massive that it triggered the 'Year Without a Summer' in 1816, plunging the Northern Hemisphere into unprecedented cold and widespread famine.
This cataclysmic eruption, rated a 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, ejected an estimated 100 cubic kilometers of material, including immense quantities of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. These gases formed sulfate aerosols that reflected solar radiation, leading to a global temperature drop of up to 3 degrees Celsius in some regions. The resulting climate anomaly devastated agriculture across Europe and North America, caused widespread food shortages, triggered migration, and even influenced art, inspiring Mary Shelley's *Frankenstein* and Lord Byron's poem *Darkness* during their dreary summer in Switzerland.
