Victor Hugo's Naked Truth: How He Mastered 'Les Misérables'

Did you know that Victor Hugo, while writing his magnum opus 'Les Misérables,' sometimes had his servants hide his clothes to prevent him from leaving his house and force him to focus on his work?

This extreme method was Hugo's unconventional way of battling procrastination and maintaining rigorous discipline during the demanding creation of his epic novel. He would often write in the nude or wrapped in a large gray shawl, dictating specific hours for his servants to return his attire, effectively trapping himself indoors with his manuscript. This self-imposed isolation and unique ritual highlight the monumental effort behind one of literature's most enduring masterpieces, which took him nearly 17 years to complete.
