Why Rising Prices Can Sometimes *Boost* Demand: The Giffen Good Paradox

Did you know that some rare goods defy basic economic laws, seeing an *increase* in demand when their prices rise? These 'Giffen goods' are so essential for the very poor that a price hike forces them to buy more, not less.

Named after Scottish economist Sir Robert Giffen, this unusual phenomenon primarily occurs with inferior staple foods that constitute a large portion of a household's budget. When the price of such a good increases, consumers' real income effectively falls so much that they can no longer afford more expensive substitutes and are compelled to purchase even more of the now costlier, yet still cheapest, staple to survive. This strong 'income effect' overwhelms the usual 'substitution effect,' leading to an upward-sloping demand curve, a stark contrast to the typical law of demand.
