Wombats are the sole creatures on Earth known to produce cube-shaped feces, a unique biological puzzle that aids them in marking territory without their droppings rolling away.
This peculiar cuboid shape is attributed to the varying stiffness and elasticity within the final section of their intestines, particularly the last few meters. Unlike typical circular contractions, the wombat's gut applies uneven pressure, molding the waste into distinct cubes during the digestive process, which can take up to 18 days. This adaptation is vital for their communication, as wombats stack their droppings on prominent rocks and logs to signal to other wombats, and the flat sides of the cubes prevent them from tumbling off these elevated markers.
