Beyond GDP: The Kingdom That Measures Happiness, Not Just Wealth

Beyond GDP: The Kingdom That Measures Happiness, Not Just Wealth

Did you know that the Kingdom of Bhutan officially prioritizes 'Gross National Happiness' (GNH) over Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as its main development indicator? It's a unique economic philosophy aiming for collective well-being rather than mere material wealth.

The concept of GNH was first articulated by Bhutan's Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, in 1972. It's built upon four pillars: good governance, sustainable socio-economic development, preservation and promotion of culture, and environmental conservation. Unlike GDP, which focuses solely on economic output, GNH considers psychological well-being, health, education, ecological diversity, and living standards, offering a holistic framework for progress. Bhutan integrates GNH principles into its national planning and policy-making processes, striving for a balanced approach to modernity.
