Our Milky Way galaxy is believed to harbor billions of 'rogue planets' that drift aimlessly through interstellar space. These solitary worlds, known as free-floating planets, never orbit a star and exist in perpetual cosmic darkness.
These fascinating exoplanets are thought to have been ejected from their birth stellar systems due to gravitational instability, or they may have formed directly from collapsing gas clouds without ever coalescing around a star. Detecting them is incredibly challenging as they don't emit their own light and aren't backlit by a sun. Scientists often rely on 'gravitational microlensing,' where the planet's gravity temporarily magnifies light from a distant background star, to infer their presence. These cosmic orphans offer a unique perspective on planet formation and the potential for life in entirely different environments, far from the warmth of a parent star.
