Did a Medieval Monk's Math Book Power Modern Capitalism?

Did you know? The fundamental system of double-entry bookkeeping, essential to modern accounting and finance, was first comprehensively described and popularized in 1494 by Luca Pacioli, an Italian Franciscan friar and mathematician, not a merchant or banker.

Pacioli's seminal work, 'Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalita,' included a detailed treatise on bookkeeping that codified Venetian mercantile practices. This 'method of Venice,' which dictates that every financial transaction has an equal and opposite effect (debits equal credits), provided unparalleled clarity in tracking assets, liabilities, and equity. This innovation was crucial for enabling more complex business ventures, facilitating capital accumulation, and forming the bedrock upon which modern corporations and sophisticated economic systems could develop, making it a silent catalyst for global commerce.
