Everest Isn't Earth's Farthest Point from Space!
While Mount Everest stands as the highest mountain above sea level, Ecuador's Mount Chimborazo actually holds the record for being the farthest point from the Earth's center. This surprising difference is due to our planet's unique shape.
Earth is not a perfect sphere but an oblate spheroid, meaning it bulges significantly at the equator and is flattened at the poles. Since Chimborazo is located very close to the equator, its summit benefits from this equatorial bulge, placing it approximately 2,072 meters (6,798 feet) farther from the Earth's core than Everest's peak. Although Everest soars to 8,848 meters (29,032 feet) above sea level, Chimborazo's summit is only 6,268 meters (20,564 feet) above sea level, highlighting that 'height' depends entirely on the chosen reference point. This fascinating geological fact is a key concept in geodesy, the science of measuring and understanding Earth's shape.
