Hudson Bay: Where Gravity Takes a Dip

Scientists have identified two primary reasons for this gravitational dip. One is the ongoing rebound effect from the Last Glacial Maximum: during the ice age, massive ice sheets pushed down the Earth's crust, and the land is still slowly rising back, causing a lower mass density in the mantle below. The second, more debated factor, is related to convection currents in the Earth's mantle, where upward flows of less dense material further reduce the gravitational pull.
