Frozen Solid: The Frog That Cheats Death Every Winter!
Did you know that certain frog species, like the wood frog, can literally freeze solid during winter, with their heart stopping and breathing ceasing, only to thaw out and revive in the spring?
These incredible amphibians achieve this by producing a natural antifreeze, primarily glucose, which floods their cells, preventing ice crystal formation inside. While ice does form in their extracellular spaces, effectively freezing most of their body water, their cells remain protected from damage. This remarkable adaptation allows them to survive harsh sub-zero temperatures for weeks, making them one of nature's most extreme examples of cryopreservation, ready to hop back to life when the thaw arrives.
