Just 2.4 Miles Apart, Yet a Whole Day Ahead: The Diomede Islands Paradox
Big Diomede and Little Diomede islands are separated by a mere 2.4 miles (3.8 km) across the Bering Strait, but because the International Date Line runs directly between them, they are effectively a full day apart in time.
The two islands, Big Diomede (belonging to Russia) and Little Diomede (USA), are situated in the Bering Strait. While a mere 2.4 miles separates their landmasses, the International Date Line slices directly through this narrow gap. This geographic peculiarity means that when it's, for example, 9 AM on Tuesday on Little Diomede, it's already 9 AM on Wednesday on Big Diomede. The islands are sometimes poetically referred to as "Tomorrow Island" and "Yesterday Island," highlighting this unique temporal divide. During the Cold War, the strait between them became known as the "Ice Curtain."
